A kestrel hovered in the still air, its pointed wings and long tail clearly outlined in the pearly morning light. Swift sat still and watched it, oars trailing in the water. It plunged, diving down to the riverbank and grabbing its prey in its curved beak. He edged the boat in by the bank, took a drink of water and read the latest email sent to Gabe and Thomas Maddox.

Here’s a riddle for you, Gabe. You don’t know me, you wouldn’t recognise me but you’ve met me. Was I in one of your business meetings maybe? Or did I have a holiday in your luxurious accommodation? I might reveal all one day.

Have you heard of ‘ambiguous grieving’? I read about it on the internet. The idea comes from the USA, like a lot of other touchy feely jargon. It’s accurate, though. It means that state you’re in when you don’t know whether to grieve or live in hope. You must both be in that state most of the time. Especially you, Thomas. I’m not so sure about Gabe. Have you got a heart, Gabe? Sometimes I wonder. How would I make sure you have?

I heard you almost had a run in with a tube train, Thomas. You should be more careful. The world is a hostile place. Hope you’re feeling better.

I emailed your investigator but he’s very rude. No reply. Maybe he’s asleep. Hope you get your money’s worth there.
